Linen Fabrics
Linen fabrics for airy, natural clothing
Linen fabrics are perfect if you love a natural, fresh look and clothes that feel comfortable in the warmer months. The fabric feels sturdy yet pleasant to wear, is highly breathable and has that characteristic, slightly irregular texture that makes linen so recognisable. This makes linen ideal for timeless, stylish garments that you will enjoy wearing year after year.
What is linen fabric?
Linen is made from the fibres of the flax plant. It is a natural, strong fibre with excellent breathability. Linen feels cool against the skin and absorbs moisture well, which makes it particularly comfortable to wear in higher temperatures.
In addition to 100% linen, there are also linen-blend fabrics, for example linen mixed with cotton or viscose. These blends keep the natural character and appearance of linen, but may drape a little more softly or crease slightly less. This allows you to choose exactly the right quality for each project.
Uses for linen fabrics
You can use linen to sew many different types of garments, such as:
airy dresses and summer dresses
blouses and tunics
trousers and culottes
skirts and wrap skirts
casual jackets and waistcoats
Linen is also very suitable for simple home accessories, such as cushion covers, table runners or curtains with a natural look. A plain linen fabric is the perfect base for a calm, timeless wardrobe. With a linen blend or a linen-look fabric, you create a similar effect with a slightly softer drape.

In this category you will find a variety of linen and linen-blend fabrics by the metre, in different colours and qualities. Think of neutral shades such as sand, ecru and olive green, but also deeper colours for eye-catching dresses, trousers or blouses. For each fabric we describe the composition, fabric width and recommended use, so you can make a well-informed choice. Looking for special prints? Then have a look at our TST linen print fabrics.
Because you can order from 50 centimetres upwards, it is easy to match the amount of fabric to your sewing pattern. This helps you avoid leftover fabric and know exactly where you stand. By combining linen with, for example, a viscose or cotton in a matching colour, you can put together several coordinating garments in one go.
Tips for sewing with linen
Linen can shrink in the wash. That’s why it is advisable to always pre-wash and dry the fabric in the same way you plan to care for the finished garment. Afterwards, press the fabric smooth before cutting out your pattern pieces, so everything stays nicely on grain.
Use a universal needle in the right size for your chosen fabric (for example size 80 or 90 for a slightly heavier linen). Linen tends to fray more than some other fabrics, so finish your seams neatly with an overlock stitch or zigzag stitch. When designing, keep the natural creasing of linen in mind – it is part of the charm of the fabric and contributes to its relaxed, elegant look.
Frequently asked questions about linen fabrics
Does linen shrink in the wash?
Yes, linen can shrink by a few percent. That’s why pre-washing is important before you start cutting and sewing.
Is linen suitable for trousers?
Absolutely. A slightly heavier linen or linen blend is very suitable for wide-leg trousers, culottes or a relaxed straight-leg trouser. For tight-fitting trousers, a fabric with a bit more stretch is often more comfortable.
What can I do about creasing in linen?
Creasing is a natural characteristic of linen and part of its charm. By pressing the fabric well after washing and hanging the garment neatly, you can keep creasing under control and achieve a beautiful, relaxed look.
